Illusionist David Blaine Was 38 Seconds Away from Death
On May 1, 2006, Blaine was submerged in an 8 foot (2.4 m) diameter, water-filled sphere (isotonic saline, 0.9% salt) in front of the Lincoln Center in New York for a planned seven days and seven nights, using tubes for air and nutrition.
On May 8, David Blaine was featured in a two-hour special on NBC called "Drowned Alive." The escape artist tried to break the underwater breathing record of 8 minutes and 58 seconds while also trying to break free of handcuffs and chains.
Blaine held his breath before being pulled up by the support divers, thus failing in his attempt. While David Blaine did not beat the record of 8 minutes and 58 seconds, he still managed an impressive time of 7 minutes and 8 seconds after living in a water tank for the last 177 hours.
