The Corpse Flower in Bloom at Brooklyn Botanical Garden

"The Corpse Flower is a very rare flower that smells like a rotten corpse when in bloom. Thankfully, when we arrived, the stench was not too bad since the bloom was almost over."

"Everybody wanted a photo of the flower."

Corpse Flower in Bloom at Brooklyn Botanical Garden, New York City

Amorphophallus titanum or Corpse Flower is a flowering plant with the largest unbranched inflorescence in the world. When it blooms, it gives out an odor, similar to that of rotting flesh, hence the name "Corpse Flower". The blooming of this plant is extremely rare, and so, whenever it happens in any botanical garden around the world, people flock to see it from far and wide. The photos on this page are when the Corpse Flower bloomed in Brooklyn Botanical Garden in 2006. The last time one of these flowers bloomed in New York was in 1939!!!

"Notice the little cut at the bottom of the flower? It was made by botanists to pollinate the flower when it was in full bloom."
