Madison Avenue, Manhattan

August 18, 2002

New York CityPass

Madhuri Dixit was the grand marshal at this year´s National India Day Parade in NYC.
The three day event, which took place from August 17th to the 19th at New York City is an annual event attended by the who is who of the Indian community from the tri-state area.
The events included a parade organised by the Federation of Indian Associations (FIA) along the Madison Avenue and a cultural event in the evening.
The Empire State Building was draped with Indian colors of orange, white and green lights at the top of the tower to mark the Independence day.
Previously other stars have been grand marshals, they include Mahima Chaudhary, Zeenat Aman and many others.

Famous for her acting and her million dollar smile, no actress has given more hits in last 15 years than Madhuri. Some of her most memorable roles are in Hum Aapke Hain Koun, Tezaab, Ram Lakhan, Beta, Dil, & Khalnayak.

After her 'Choli ke peeche' song in Khalnayak, which caused a stir, women liberation groups in India asked for a ban on Madhuri Dixit! The color of saffron/kesaria stand for patriotism (balidaan), white is for simplicity and peace, green is for agriculture (kheti) farming (kisan) and greenery (hariyali), the navy blue wheel in the center is the "Ashoka chakra", the wheel of progress.

The tricolor had been used, unofficially, since the early 1920s as the flag of the Indian National Congress, with the colors representing Hinduism (orange), Islam (green), and a hoped-for unity and peace (white). Protesters: They wanted Peace, Kashmir and Equality of the sexes, though not in that order!
