The Afloat Lab is the Office of Naval Research's technology flagship and is nicknamed the STARFISH after the experimental, self-healing navigational equipment installed onboard. The vessel, a former Naval Academy Yard Patrol (YP) craft, is a demonstration platform for the latest innovations in naval technology, and is used for "at sea" testing and evaluation of mission critical equipment. The Office of Naval Research manages the science and technology programs for the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps. "From Discovery to Deployment," these programs, conducted in collaboration with military, civilian and university researchers around the world range from medicine to oceanography, advanced materials to sensors, robotics to electronics, and mathematics to acoustics.
