The Twin Tower Crashes: September 11, 2001 Photos - Part 4

World Trade Center Complex, Downtown Manhattan September 11, 2001

IN THE DANGER ZONE (1 BLOCK AWAY FROM GROUND ZERO)

New York CityPass

Pictures taken from 12:15 pm to 12:56 pm on Sep 11, 2001. Place: Financial District, Lower Manhattan.
Most of the owners of the cars parked nearby are still missing. Now presumed to be dead.
(New York-WABC, April 13, 2004) -- A secret service agent is expected to be charged today with stealing cars recovered from Ground Zero following the September 11th attacks. William Bennette will turn himself in to federal prosecutors in Brooklyn to face charges that he stole five undamaged cars from the Fresh Kills Landfill on Staten Island.
Paramedics evacuating the injured from a nearby building... View from John Street.
With dedicated people like this working for you, you won't feel any panic. Hats off to the NYPD, FDNY and Paramedics. The smoke filled Manhattan sky. The Towers stood where you see the blue sky behind me.
One of the several damaged NYPD vehicles. A delivery that didn't happen.
A Bangladeshi vendor salvaging what he can.. Hundreds of illegal people are missing - with no records of any sort, their families won't get any help from the Govt. The papers sewn over the ground were lying elegantly in some of the offices in the WTC only hours before. The paper made it out along with the ashes of the workers. The heat and pressure generated by the crash turned most of the people caught in the offices into ash. Rescue units working tirelessly, Scene from Downtown Manhattan.
Jean Dubuffet's "Four Trees" (1972), in the plaza of the Chase Manhattan Bank... 4 blocks away from the WTC A question about the chances of finding any survivors..
Maiden Lane... just 1 block away from the WTC Complex. It was impossible to take any pictures due to the falling soot and debris. Breathing was impossible and so was keeping the eyes open. I could stay there only for a few minutes. Now we know how it is to be a part of a war! Another View from Maiden Lane/William Street. The Federal Reserve Bank ("Fed", blt.1924), where around half of the world's entire stock of gold, in total 700,000 gold bars are kept, is in the background. Only 2% of this gold belongs to the United States.
Maiden Lane. Get the hell out. We are testing for poisonous gases!
The way out. Another photo of the "Fed". and it is NOT snow that is covering the plants.
A Channel 9 (UPN) van.. The crew had to abandon the van. The channel was also offline for about three weeks. Most of the Subway Stations in the area are still closed (as of Sep 22)
Broadway - 1 block from Ground Zero (4 hrs after the first crash). National Guards being deployed.
The New York Stock Exchange (blt. 1903) - the largest Stock Exchange in US and the most important in the world. The National Guard protecting the NYSE. It was business as usual within a week here!
Another view of the NYSE. The white soot contains the burned ashes of about 5,000 people, parts of the buildings and the two planes.
ONE YEAR LATER (AFP) - The official death toll in the September 11 terrorist attack on the World Trade Center has been revised steadily downward, and now stands at 2,843, city officials said Monday. A high of more than 6,500 in mid-September has gradually declined as duplications have been discovered and people reported as missing have been found. TWO YEARS LATER The remains of about 1,520 people have been identified, most of them by DNA, and 1,230 others were confirmed dead by the courts because families submitted proof to a judge that the victim was at the trade center or on one of the hijacked planes that crashed into the twin towers.
Phones were down, so was power and the air was suffocating.. Some took refuge inside the shops to catch their breath.
